Discovery of 2-Pound "Nugget" of Gold in Australia

6/29/2013

Robert Crump ("Bah Gum" Crump; 1826-1912) was a grandson of my 4th great grandparents, Robert Coulthard (1761-1846) and Jane Dalton (1766-1833) from the Wetheral/Cumwhinton area of Cumberland (Cumbria).  He emigrated to Australia from Penrith, Cumberland with his wife and family in 1852. In 1865, he discovered a huge "nugget" of gold weighing about 2 pounds, which family lore indicates may have brought in sufficient money to buy a property.

The Dumbell Watchmakers of Liverpool

Antique Pocket Watch
How naive I was when I assumed it would be easy to research my 2nd G-grandfather, the watchmaker Joseph Dumbell, who was born in ~1823 in Liverpool, and his close relatives. The surname was unusual and with having an occupation of watchmaker (rather than something more common such as labourer or painter), I expected it would be pretty easy. But I was wrong. Trying to work out who belonged to which family and how all the watchmakers were related was the start of my interest in the Dumbell family of Liverpool, especially those who were clock and watchmakers. I've identified at least 10 who had that profession and plan to write up something detailed about them on how I believe they were all related.

Significance of the names Littlejohn and Napier in the Boulton Family?

Six of the 9 children of my 3rd G-grandparents, Benjamin Dawson Boulton (~1811-1845) and Jane Cross (1809-1871), had middle names that I think may have been significant:
  • Henry Littlejohn Boulton (1832-1898), my 2nd G-grandfather;
  • Jane Catherine Dawson Boulton (1835-1899);
  • Benjamin Dawson Boulton (1838-1839);
  • John Dawson Boulton (1839-1879);
  • Charles Napier Boulton (1841-1914);
  • William Napier Boulton (1845-1870).
