SKINNY BRANCHES
For most of the branches on my tree, there seem to be a fair number of people researching them, and so the descendant branches are pretty full. And for some branches there are an extraordinarily large number of researchers, for example, the Grieve branch from Selkirkshire and Dumfries-shire, Scotland and the Corlett-Norris branch from the Isle of Man. However, I have a few branches that no-one else seems to be interested in, except for the occasional person who found my on-line tree and then added the same people to their trees (which I don't mind at all), usually descended via a similar line as mine, so the branch doesn't "bush out" with descendants.
I have 4 particularly "skinny" branches on my tree. Do Get in Touch if you are a descendant of any the people shown below, so we can expand our family trees. In particular with the last one (Elizabeth Hetherington Branch), I can definitely help you with some DNA that I have inherited, and yet you won't have, even if any of these people are your direct ancestors, unless you are on Elizabeth's "matriline" – that is, descended from her daughter's daughter's, daughter's, daughter (however many times) – males can have inherited Elizabeth's mitochondrial DNA, but ONLY if your mother was on the matriline of Elizabeth or one of her matrilineal ancestors or descendants (males cannot pass this on to their children).

John Samuel Beer Branch
John Samuel Beer, Sr. (1832-1906), my 2nd great grandfather, was born in Devonport, Devon and died of cancer of the mouth in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He was a butcher, as were his father, John Barrett Beer, grandfather John Beer, and son, John Samuel Beer, Jr. His mother was Sarah Priscilla Couch. He had 2 wives in England, my 2nd great grandmother Eliza Ann Back (1831-1862; her father is on another skinny branch below), with whom he had 5 children (of whom only my great grandfather, John Samuel Beer, Jr. (1858-1934) was the only one to survive – he moved to the Liverpool area), and Jane Vice (1836-1882), who was the widow of William Boundey, and he had a daughter with her (Eliza Jane Beer). He had 7 children in Canada with Susannah Austin (see Message Board Posting) and their names seemed to change to Beere after John Samuel Beer, senior died: Sarah Elizabeth Beere (1878-1974), Louisa Austin Beere (1879-1917, who married Charles Ernest Russell, 1881-1916), Mary Sophia Beere (1880-1939), James Beer (1882-?), Ada(h) Morris Beere (1883-1962), George Greig Beer (1885-?), and Charles William Beere (1888-1956).
John Samuel Beer's parents died in Stoke Damerel Workhouse, also known as Devonport Workhouse. I've not really found anyone researching the English branches (except for my ancestral branch), and only know of cousins from one of John and Sarah's 7 children, so Get in Touch if you are related. I have birth, marriage and death certificates for everyone on this branch, together with parish records and a lot of other information, which I'm happy to provide. Other ancestors on this branch were Elizabeth Barrett (~1770-1832), Sampson Barrett (died before 1786), Andrew Couch (died somewhere between 1824 and 1836), Phoebe Hunter (~1777-1859), Henry Hunter (~1749-1820), and Sarah Baker (~1758-1841). |

John Back Branch
John Back (~1768-1853), my 3rd great grandfather, was a shipwright. He was born in Morchard Bishop (= West Morchet), Devon and died in Stoke Damerel (cause of death: disease of the bladder and old age). He married his first wife, Martha Norton (1772-1825) in Topsham, Devon and his 2nd wife, Mary Ann Sambell (1786-1864) (through whom I'm related) in Plymouth, Devon. Mary Ann Sambell was from St. German's, Cornwall, and her first husband was John Olver (1771-1828). They married in Plymouth, Devon.
Other direct-line ancestors on this branch were, tentatively, William Back, John Back, Elizabeth Bond, Faith Norcott, Richard Northcott, Anne Garnsay, Absolom Northcott, Roger Northcott, Susanna Edworthy, Sussana Edworthy, Andrew Edworthy, Thomas Garnsay, and Anne Southcott. I know very little about this branch except for my line, so please Contact Me is you are related or if you have any information on them. |

Benjamin Dawson Boulton Branch
Benjamin Dawson Boulton (~1811-1845), my 3rd great-grandfather, was born in Whitchurch, Shropshire and was an auctioneer. His parents were Benjamin Boulton (?-1832), whose occupation was interestingly a castrator of livestock (as were his son John Dawson Boulton [1839-1879], and John's 3 surviving sons), and Sarah Dawson (1777-1859), also from Whitchurch, from whom his middle name came. He married Jane Cross (1809-1871) and they lived in Liverpool, Lancashire. They had 9 children and I've written a blog posting about the middle names of 6 of these children (see Boulton Family Blog Posting), as I'm struggling to find the origin of the middle names of Littlejohn and Napier within this family. Benjamin Dawson Boulton died of tuberculosis when only 34 years old.
A branch of the family emigrated to Toronto, Ontario, Canada – the spelling of that branch and others in the family was variably spelled as Bolton, rather than Boulton. Other direct-line relatives of mine were Benjamin Boulton (?-1816), Roger Dawson (~1750-?) and Elizabeth Alinson (~1750-?), all from Whitchurch, Shropshire. If you are related, I'd love to hear from you (Contact Me). |

Elizabeth Hetherington Branch
Elizabeth Hetherington, my 3rd great grandmother, was born in Castle Sowerby, Cumberland, ~1786. She was the 2nd oldest child, and only daughter, of Robert Hetherington (born ~1755 Cumberland and died 1829 in Harraby, Cumberland) and Sarah Dixon (born ~1755 in Cumberland and died 1849 in Cumwhinton, Cumberland). Elizabeth Hetherington married William Coulthard (~1789-1852). They lived in Cumwhinton, Cumberland and had 8 children. Elizabeth died of cholera the same day that her mother, Sarah, died of old age. I am descended from their second-to-youngest child, Mary Ann Coulthard (~1828-1928), who married Henry Grieve (1830-1904).
Multiple people are researching the Grieve branch, but very few seem to be interested in the Hetherington or Dixon branches, so Contact Me if you are related. I have inherited the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from this branch (see Genetic Genealogy for why this is particularly useful to you if you are related), as it is my direct maternal line. Even if we are as close as 1st cousins, you may not have this DNA in your own genome, and yet it will be invaluable to your genealogy research. See My DNA Results from 4 Companies, which gives the mtDNA Haplotype of this line. I will be happy to give you access to the raw data if you are related. See also Do You Have the Right DNA?, as you may be able to help me too. |
