NEHEMIAH HORNBY & ELIZABETH YEATS LINE

Picture
DNA Double Helix
Nehemiah Hornby (1731-1812) and Elizabeth Yeats (?-bef. 1797), from the Huyton and Childwall areas of Liverpool, Lancashire, were my maternal 6th great-grandparents. This Hornby line has turned out to be quite productive in making DNA connections; 3 previous strangers and I have been able to work out that our common ancestors were Nehemiah Hornby and Elizabeth Yeats, based on being shown on each other's DNA match lists on either Family Tree DNA or 23andMe (AncestryDNA is the other company that runs autosomal DNA tests as used for the analyses here) and other known distant relatives have also inherited DNA from this couple. Even though we are quite distant relatives (approximately 5th to 6th cousin range), we can map some of the genome of the Hornby-Yeats line on the Chromosome Map below.

Nehemiah Hornby and Elizabeth Yeats had 9 children (see Family Tree below):
  • John Hornby (1759-1759)
  • Sarah (Sally) Hornby (1760-1833), who was my maternal 5th great-grandmother and married John Woolfall (~1760-1810) – my Mother, Aunt, 1st cousins via another aunt (A.B. and A.B.T.), and I [Sue] (see figure) are descended from this line
  • Henry Hornby (1762-1845), who married Elizabeth Eaton (1765-1839) – my new 6th cousin x1 removed, K.D., and new 6th cousin x2 removed, A.J., together with A.J.'s son M.J. (see below), are descended from this line
  • John Hornby (1765-bef. 1768)
  • John Hornby (1768-bef. 1773)
  • John Hornby (1773-?)
  • Betty Hornby (1770-bef. 1778)
  • John Hornby (1773-?)
  • James Hornby (1774-1838), who married Martha Cookson (1780-1849) – my new 5th cousin x1 removed, A.L. (see below), is descended from this line, as are my 5th cousins x2 removed, P.G. and S.G., who are sisters
  • Elizabeth Hornby (1778-?)
Of these 9 children, at least 5 of them died in childhood; John was a particularly unlucky name to have in this family, as 4 of the sons were named John, presumably because 3 of them had died previously.

Chromosome Map

By making comparisons between the DNA between pairs of individuals who have undergone DNA testing, a chromosome map has been created, with the genome coverage established so-far for this Hornby-Yeats line. I used Kitty Cooper's great Overlapping Segment Mapping Tool to create this and the relationship between the pairs of individuals compared is shown in parentheses in the legend. I hope to be able to add to this as more relatives are tested. See Here for more information on chromosome mapping and tools.

Click on the image of the chromosome map below (or click Here) to open it as a much clearer figure in HTML with fully functional mouse-overs, showing start and stop positions of each matching DNA segment, the pair of individuals matching, and the segment lengths in cM.

Family Tree

If you subscribe to Ancestry, you will be able to see Nehemiah Hornby and Elizabeth Yeats on my public family tree. Click image below for a PDF of the descendant chart, showing individuals who have been confirmed using autosomal DNA.

Do You Have the Right DNA?

If you are a descendant of Nehemiah Hornby and Elizabeth Yeats and have either undergone DNA testing or are interested in being tested, please Contact Me, so we can share information and make additional comparisons – having family groups really maximizes what can be worked out, thus helping all of us. By comparing the DNA between multiple pairs of individuals (if the DNA testing companies are different, we can do this by uploading raw DNA data to the amazing free website GEDmatch), we may be able to fill in more of the chromosome map. See Here for our GEDmatch numbers.
